The Kansas National Guard dispatched today to begin assisting the Gulf Coast states recovering from Hurricane Gustav. This is the first of two waves of around 600 Kansas Guard members sent to help restore communications and direct relief efforts in the South.
One Douglas County man will accompany the Kansas National Guard in their relief efforts. Aid is being offered in some other states including some religious groups who are providing thousands of meals.
Lawrence and Douglas County residents are doing their part to help the hard-hit Gulf Coast. Douglas County Red Cross Executive Director Jane Blocher encourages members of the community to help by making a financial donation at www.RedCross.org in lieu of donating material goods.
