Monday marked the 146th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, more commonly known as Cinco de Mayo.

Harnan Garcia, a teaching assistant in the Spanish department, said that in Mexico the battle was known as La Bintania La Pueblo. The Mexicans defeated a French invasion.

"It is a battle that is very significant because it was a battle fought without a professional army," Garcia said.

The May 5 battle, a national holiday in Mexico, is also celebrated in the United States. Mexican restaurants in Lawrence have stocked up on supplies of tequila in preparation for crowds of celebrants.

Jose Lopez of Celito Lindo said that traditionally, the restaurant runs out of chips and margaritas.
