The Lawrence City Commission gave preliminary approval to relocating the Lawrence Community Shelter at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.

The Lawrence Community Shelter wants to relocate into an industrial area in the future. But residents of that area attended the meeting Tuesday night to object, praising the calm night life that now exists.

Residents admitted that they were worried that the addition of a homeless shelter in the area would negatively affect the neighborhood.

"Personally, the biggest problem I have is that it is a shelter that does attract a lot of people with drug and alcohol problems and, you know, any time you drive by there there are people hanging out outside and around the shelter. It's not something you want in your neighborhood," Julie Mitchell, Brook Creek neighborhood representative, said.

City Commissioners will continue to discuss moving the controversial homeless shelter out of downtown Lawrence. The director of the shelter said it does not expect a move for about two years.
