The Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Davidson Wildcats 59 – 57 on Sunday night to advance to the Final Four in San Antonio. Neither team led by more than six points during the game, and it took an 11-2 scoring run by Kansas over an eight minute span late in the second half to give the Jayhawks the lead.
Kansas players, coaches, and fans could not breathe easy until Davidson point guard Jason Richards missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, which gave Kansas the win and the opportunity to play in San Antonio.
Sasha Kaun and Mario Chalmers led the Jayhawks with 13 points each while Brandon Rush added 12 points. Davidson guard Stephen Curry led all scorers with 25 points, but was limited to 10 in the second half as KU rotated among a box-and-one, man-to-man, and triangle-two defenses. Curry was named the Midwest Regional’s Most Outstanding Player. Chalmers, Kaun, and Rush were honored as members of the All-Regional team.
KU will take on North Carolina and former Kansas coach Roy Williams on Saturday, April 5, in San Antonio. Joining KU in the Final Four are UCLA, Memphis, and North Carolina. This marks the first time in NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament history that all four number one seeds have advanced to the Final Four.
