The Kansas Jayhawks women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end Thursday night at the hands of the Michigan State Spartans.

Despite a career-high eight steals from Danielle McCray, the Jayhawks were unable to overcome 13 first-half turnovers. McCray finished the night with nine rebounds and 18 points in addition to her eight steals.

Freshman center Krysten Boogaard chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds, even though she was guarded for most of the game by Michigan State’s 6-foot-9-inch center, Allyssa DeHaan. DeHaan led Michigan State with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.

While Michigan State had a clear height advantage over Kansas, the Jayhawks managed to outscore the Spartans in the paint and grab two more rebounds during the game. Kansas also scored more transition points than the Spartans, but head coach Bonnie Henrickson was disappointed with her team’s lack of fast-break points in the second half.

“I thought we dribbled it too much. I think we should have thrown it ahead like we did in the first half,” Henrickson said.

The Kansas Jayhawks finish the 2007-2008 season with a record of 17 wins and 16 losses. Coach Henrickson believes that playing in the WNIT gives her team a head start for preparing for next season.

“We’ve had great workouts and the experience of the games has been great,” Henrickson said. “It’s just disappointing we weren’t able to get out of here with a win.”
