Jayhawks nationwide are coming home this week as KU kicks off festivities in anticipation of Saturday's homecoming football game.

This year's homecoming has students more excited than previous years with events like the annual homecoming basketball tournament, a "flying money" machine, a bus stuffed full of can foods, and of course, an undefeated football team. The events aren't only intended for students, but are encouraged for the entire Lawrence community. The festivities kicked off last weekend and continue through Saturday.

"We had a great turnout at 'Stuff the Bus' on Saturday and Sunday," said Meghan Easter, Homecoming Co-Director. "We had over then thousand cans donated so it was really successful."

Easter said that the cans that "stuffed" the bus will be donated to local food pantries.

The homecoming committee started planning events last spring with the hopes of increasing participation from students and the general community.

"In the past it has been a lot of the organizations, fraternities and sororities and all the other groups around campus, that have been involved," Brian Teefey, Daily Events Co-Chair, said. "You see a lot of people that walk by and don't know what's going on. So we were trying to get more events this year that can get more of the student body involved."

So far, their goals have been achieved. Teefey said that participation in the basketball tournament quadrupled this year and that feedback about other events has been positive. With events being held all over campus, students have plenty of opportunities left to participate in the festivities. And even though homecoming week is quickly drawing to a close, the homecoming committee hopes the increased spirit lasts long after the football game ends.
